Working from home can be great: you can pick your hours, choose when you wish to take a break, and there’s no commuting to and from an office!
This year, many people are doing their job from home, some for the first time. If you’re looking to set up a home office space for the first time, there are a few things to consider, such as where a good spot to work from could be, what type of chair you need, and whether you require additional equipment to do your work from home.

Pick a spot away from distractions
When choosing a spot for your home office setup, it’s best to pick somewhere free from distractions, to allow you to focus on the tasks you need to complete. A spare room with plenty of fresh air and natural light is ideal, but if you’re a little short on space, any quiet area of your home will do just fine. Decorate your desk with your own style, but try to keep it relatively clean and clear. A small pot plant, mascot, or decorative lamp can help tie the home office space together!
Make sure you have all the equipment you need
There’s nothing worse than realising you don’t have all the equipment you need when you’re running out of time to complete a deadline. To combat future stress, think about all of the tasks you are required to do at work and figure out how you will complete them. For example, your job may require you to video call with clients, in which case, a webcam could be needed. Or maybe you need to print documents? If so, you will need to choose a printer, set it up, and ensure you always have plenty of ink for your printing needs!
Pick a good chair
While it may be nice to take the laptop to the couch every now and then, you’re probably going to be sitting at a desk for a lot of the day, which means it’s important that your back has good support. There are lots of different chairs out there, but try to pick one that is comfortable and supportive. If you work from home, your work chair will be somewhere you’ll most likely spend a lot of the day, so it can be worth paying a little extra and investing in one that is high quality.
Consider the desk
The desk is another important item for setting up a home office. It will – most likely – be the spot where your computer sits most of the time, along with important documents (and possibly a pot plant!). When shopping for a desk, consider what you need from it to complete your work. Do you need a space to store papers and documents, or other items you need for work? If so, it might be worth thinking about purchasing a desk with built-in draws. How large do you need the desk to be? Will you be using multiple monitors or just the one? Do you need a desk that fits with the aesthetic of your home, or just something that is sturdy and practical? These are all important questions to think about before making your purchase.
If you can, set up a few different spaces
This isn’t always a possibility, but if you have the space and freedom, why not set up a few different spaces from which you can work? Setting up multiple spaces can be great for those who tend to feel bogged down from sitting in one space all day. Some alternative options to the standard home office space are a chill-out, beanbag zone, or sitting on the balcony enjoying some fresh air and a warm drink. For those without the option of multiple spaces, consider going to a café to change up the scenery if you’re feeling blocked.
Keep work and downtime separate
Sometimes it can be difficult to maintain focus when working from home. It can be tempting to overextend hours or work at designated leisure times. Some people find that a way to help keep focus and boost productivity is to ensure work and downtime remain separate. Having an area of your home that you associate with work can help you to remain focused on the tasks at hand while you are there, and switch off from work mode when you are not. Finding the balance is tricky, but practising good habits such as not working from bed, and not eating (or scrolling social media!) at the work desk can assist in building work and relaxation habits for the assigned areas.
There are many things that go into creating a great home office setup, from choosing the right equipment for your needs to choosing a suitable spot (or spots) in your home, to making the distinction between work and play. When planning your office setup, it’s good to think about what tasks you will be completing at home, and then building the space to best optimise doing those tasks, including buying the equipment required to do so.
With a little bit of planning (and often some trial and error), you should be able to construct a beautiful, harmonious home office space that keeps you focused and motivated to get jobs done!
