What are some solutions? Read on to find out!

Paper jam

One of the most common printing problems is a paper jam. If you’re experiencing a paper jam, the first thing you’ll want to try is to gently and slowly remove any paper that’s stuck, while also taking out the excess paper in the tray. Once you’ve removed the paper, try printing again.

If you’re unable to remove the paper this way, you might need to open up your printer’s cover and remove the jammed paper that way. After you’ve removed the jam, close the printer back up and re-try your printing.

Low ink levels

If your prints are coming out faint or if you’re getting error messages about low ink, it’s time to replace your ink cartridges. Machines will generally let you know when they’re beginning to run low on ink.

Depending on your printer, you might be able to buy just the colour that’s low, or you may need to replace all of the cartridges.

Your printer should come with instructions on how to replace the cartridges, so be sure to follow those. Once you’ve replaced the ink, try printing again.

Connectivity problems

A common issue that can occur is losing connectivity between your computer and printer. If you find your printer not printing, it could be that the connectivity has been lost somehow. This problem can arise for a number of reasons, from outdated firmware to incorrect printer settings.

The first thing you’ll want to check is that the printer is turned on and plugged in. Once you’ve checked that, take a look at your computer’s settings to see if the printer is selected as the default printer. If it’s not, you should try setting it as the default and printing again.

If that doesn’t work, you may need to uninstall and reinstall the printer drivers on your computer. You can usually find these drivers on the manufacturer’s website.

Printing errors

If you’re encountering error messages, the first thing you’ll want to try is restarting both your computer and printer. This can often fix the problem.

Still receiving error messages after this? You may need to clear the print queue. To do this on a PC, open up the Devices and Printers control panel and find your printer. Once you’ve found it, right-click on your printer and select “See what’s printing.” From there, you can click on “Printer” and then “Cancel All Documents.”

On a Mac, open up the Printer Utility and select “Reset Printing System.” This will clear the print queue.

Now try printing again.

Multi-function printer not scanning

Those with a multi-function printer may find that the scanner isn’t working, even though the printer is. This can be a connectivity issue, much like with printing.

Alternatively, it could be that the scanner software is corrupted. If this is the case, you’ll need to reinstall the printer’s software. After doing this, your scanner should hopefully work again.

In some cases, it could be that your scanner has simply stopped working, and you’ll need to purchase a new one.

Photos aren’t clear

You may notice that your printer produces great prints for text documents but photos seem to come out fuzzy or unclear. This could be happening for a number of different reasons.

It could be that you’re using the wrong type of paper. Make sure you’re using photo paper in your printer tray and not just regular printer paper. If you’re using photo paper and the images still look subpar, considering changing brands to one recommended by your printer’s manufacturer.

Still not turning out right? You may have your printer set to draft mode or to print at a lower quality that isn’t conducive to photos. Check your printer’s settings to make sure it’s set to print at the highest quality, then try again.

Printing is taking too long

Are your prints taking a long time to come out? It may be that you’ve chosen a printer with a low page per minute (ppm) rate. Each printer has an individual ppm which dictates how quickly it can produce pages. Those that require a printer that prints quickly should aim to choose one with a fast ppm rate.

If your printer is on the slower end and you’re looking for ways to speed it up, you could try printing in draft mode or another low-quality setting. You’ll sacrifice a bit of the quality but should gain some speed.

Those that have a wireless printer that seems to be printing a little too slowly may find that placing the machine closer to the router speeds it up. If you want to leave your printer where it is, you could instead purchase a wireless extender in an attempt to increase your printing speeds.

Mobile printing won’t work

Most modern printers allow for convenient mobile printing. For Apple users, there’s the AirPrint option, which works provided both the printer and iPhone or iPad are using the same Wi-Fi network.

Your printer may also work with Google Cloud Print, allowing you to print from your Google account using any internet-connected device.

Alternatively, there should be an app you can install on your mobile device that will allow it to connect to and print from your printer with ease.

If you’re having trouble printing wirelessly from your phone, the first thing you should do is check that both the mobile device and printer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. It could be that your phone is using data without you realising.

Prints are low quality

Much like when printing photos, if you’re noticing your documents are printing in low quality, it could be that you have your printer set to draft mode or another low-quality setting. You should always aim to use the correct printer settings for the type of document you’re printing.

It could also be that you’re using the wrong type of paper. For the best quality prints, make sure you’re using high-quality printer paper rather than another poorer quality type of paper.

If you’re using the correct paper and your prints are still low quality, it’s possible that your ink cartridges are low, and you’ll need to replace them.

You may also need to clean your print heads. This can usually be done from your printer’s settings.

Lines or streaks in prints

Lines or streaks in your prints can be caused by a few different things. It could be that your ink cartridges are low, and you’ll need to replace them.

It’s also possible that you need to clean your nozzle and/or print heads.

If you’re still seeing lines or streaks after replacing the ink and running a print head clean, it may be that there’s something wrong with the printer itself, and you’ll need to take it in for servicing.

Colours are off

Are you noticing that the colours in your prints are off, or not as vibrant as they should be? It’s likely that your printer’s colour management needs to be adjusted.

Different monitors will often display colours differently, making them look different to how they’ll look when printed. This is why it’s important to calibrate the colours to show a more accurate representation of how they’ll look when printed.

You can usually find the colour management settings in your printer’s control panel. From there you should be able to change the colour mode or calibrate the colours.

If you’re not sure how to do this, consult your printer’s manual or customer support.

Blank pages are printing

There could be a few reasons your printer is printing blank pages. It could be that the printer’s out of ink, that the document you’re printing from is missing content, or that there’s an issue with the printer itself.

To rule out a major printer issue, you should first check that there’s actually something to print. Open up the document or file again and make sure there’s content there.

Next, check to make sure your printer has ink. If it does, try running a print head clean from the printer’s settings and then printing a test page.

If you’re still having trouble, there may be an issue with the printer itself, in which case you will need to further troubleshoot it yourself, or get it looked at by a professional.

Printing costs a lot

Printer ink can be a little on the expensive side, and you may be noticing your print costs are starting to stack up.

As a general rule, cheap inkjet printers tend to have higher running costs than laser alternatives.

If you’re looking to save money in the long run, you may instead want to go with a laser printer. Laser printers will cost you a little more in the initial purchase, but you’ll save money on replacement toner cartridges in the long run.

Another way to save money is to use generic or compatible ink cartridges. These are cheaper alternatives to brand name cartridges and will still work with your printer. Just be sure to do your research before making a purchase, as some compatible cartridges may not be suitable for high-quality printing.

You can also try to cut down on your printing costs by only printing when necessary. Review documents before printing to make sure they don’t have any mistakes, reduce the font size of your documents to minimise the number of pages printed, and only print in colour when it’s absolutely essential.

Printer stops mid-print

Your printer may decide to stop mid-print, causing frustration (particularly for those in a rush). If this has happened to you, it could be occurring for a number of reasons.

There may be a sudden halt of communication between the printer and your device. If this is the case, try switching the machine off and then back on again. Still not working? Reinstall the printer drivers and give it another go.

Another reason your printer may stop halfway through a print is due to a paper jam. Check to see if your printer is experiencing a paper jam by opening it up and taking a look. If the paper is jamming, gently remove it, close the printer back up, and restart your print job.

Clogged print head

Those with an inkjet printer may experience a clogged print head from time to time. A few different things can cause a print head to clog, including dried ink and dust.

You’ll generally be able to tell if you have a clogged print head because the prints will come out streaky.

The first step for unclogging your print head is to run a head cleaning cycle and nozzle check. If you’re still getting streaky prints after this is completed, you may need to clean the print heads manually.

To do this, turn your printer on and disconnect it as the print heads move along the track, keeping them unparked and easier to work with. Remove the ink cartridges, take a lightly-dampened paper towel and place it underneath the print head carriage. Next, move the print heads over the paper towel. Continue this step with new paper towels until there’s no ink residue being left on them.

If you have a particularly stubborn clog, you may need to remove the entire print head assembly to get it unclogged. For this, you should look up the specific instructions provided by your printer’s manufacturer.

Printer won’t turn off

Sometimes, printers refuse to turn off. Generally, this issue can be resolved by unplugging the printer from its power source, waiting for 30 seconds, and then plugging it back in.

Alternatively, it could be that your printer’s auto-off has been switched off. Check the printer settings to ensure this is activated.

If this doesn’t resolve your issue, you may need to take a look at the instructions provided by your printer’s manufacturer regarding how to perform a reset on your printer.

Laser printer producing poor prints

When your laser printer begins producing poor-quality prints, it could mean there’s an accumulation of dust on the toner cartridge or fuser unit. Paper dust can be the cause of poor print quality, so it’s important to keep your laser printer maintained to mitigate this.

Printers will generally run their own cleaning cycles to keep dust to a minimum, so make sure the cartridge is positioned correctly within the printer to allow it to do so.

If your printer still accumulates dust with everything placed correctly, you’ll need to clean it manually. Toner cartridges can be cleaned using a dry, lint-free cloth. Once you’ve gently wiped down the cartridge, put it back in the printer and run a cleaning cycle. Your prints should then come out clear and streak-free.

Cropped image or document

Collecting your prints and documents and seeing they’ve been cropped incorrectly is annoying. This can occur when you’ve set the printer to print in landscape and the document is portrait (or vice versa), or when the printer properties are set incorrectly.

To remedy this, make sure you always print in the orientation that matches your document, and that the margin properties on your printer are set correctly. These can usually be found in the printer properties or driver settings.

Remember to carefully read your printer settings before printing to avoid wasting paper or time!

Printer turning off

Often, when a printer randomly switches off it’s due to the power cable being bumped or unplugged. To avoid this happening, try not to move the printer around during printing. Those that have a printer that connects to a device with a cable should make sure it doesn’t accidentally become disconnected during the printing. It could also be that the cable has stopped working, and you’ll need to purchase a replacement.

If your printer does turn off mid-print, check to see if the power cord is properly plugged in and that the socket it’s plugged into is switched on. If the printer is still switched off, you may need to check your printer’s power settings.

On some printers, there is a power-saving mode that kicks in when the printer is inactive for a set period of time. This mode will switch off the printer to conserve energy. To check if this is the case, look for a power-saving mode in your printer’s settings.

If your printer is still randomly turning off, it could be an issue with the machine itself. In this case, you’ll likely want to either take it in for a service or purchase a new printer.

No printing

When a printer simply won’t print, check to see if there’s an error message being displayed. This can give a clue as to what the problem might be. If there’s no error message, the first thing to check is that your printer is switched on and connected to the power.

For those with wireless printers, check to make sure the Wi-Fi is enabled and that you’re on the right network.

Sometimes, the driver becomes corrupted or needs an update, stopping your from producing prints. To test if this is the case, head to your printer manufacturer’s website and download the latest version.

Printer not printing after trying these solutions? It’s time to troubleshoot! To do this, take a look at your printer’s manual and follow the instructions for what to do when your printer stops working.

If you don’t have the time or inclination for extensive troubleshooting, there’s always the option of taking your printer to a technician. This can be costly, but if you’re not confident in fixing the problem yourself it may be a good solution.

We hope this collection of printer issues and solutions has been helpful.
